On behalf of the EC(IST) the design-for-purpose Experts Workshop is scheduled for Monday the 19th of May 2008. The workshop will engage experts with a vision for how R&D should evolve within FP7 in to debate the topics of metrology and characterisation for micro and nano technologies in the context of "design-for-purpose". This workshop is part of a series of workshops initiated by NEXUS on behalf of the EC -IST to help develop the priorities for research within the ongoing FP7 programme. The workshop will be held at the well known Systems Engineering Innovation Centre in Loughborough (UK) and will be cosponsored by the Centre of Excellence in Metrology for Micro & Nano Technologies - CEMMNT, PatentDfMM, the KTN and the SEIC. The output of this workshop will be a priority list of research areas and a roadmap to help deliver the required capabilities for Europe's MNT research, development and commercialisation activities. The SiPeX workshop aims to bring together reliability and test engineers to discuss advanced design methodologies, integration technology and assembly engineering for SiP solutions that embrace heterogeneity, multiple energy domains and mixed technology platforms. Papers are invited that address both current challenges and those expected in the future in the following areas:
- Embedded test, Design-for-test and novel test strategies
- Identification, characterization, and modeling of defects, fault and degradation mechanisms
- On-line test, health monitoring fault tolerance and self-repair
- Robust and dependable design strategies, solutions for harsh and challenging environments
- Reliability analysis and modeling techniques, FMEA and Physics of failure
- Reliability measurement and life testing strategies, test structures design, fabrication and characterization.
- Emerging approaches for Design for Reliability and Design for Yield.
- Design for Disposal, Safety Engineering (use of materials and impact on systems)
The organising committee invites authors to submit both papers and poster contributions in the above areas. Submissions should consist of either an extended summary of at least 750 words or a full paper.
Authors of accepted submissions will be encouraged, though not obliged, to prepare a final version of their paper or poster to be included in the informal workshop proceedings. Authors should submit their contributions to nouet@lirmm.fr before March 3rd, 2008.
Notification will be sent out by April 14th, 2008.

This 4-day course will be given by a combination of academic experts, industrial designers and software developers. It provides an overview of MEMS processing technologies and how to approach the design of MEMS devices. Underpinning concepts of micro-mechanics (with worked examples of accelerometer and gyroscope) and microfluidics, electronic transduction techniques, and the principles of Finite Element Analysis will be reviewed. This will be followed by tutorials on the INTEGRAMplus silicon MEMS processes, design rules and introduce various design tools for analytical design, layout and simulation (circuit-level and finite element). The MEMSWAVE International Symposia were initiated by IMT Bucharest as an outcome of the INCO-COPERNICUS project “MEMSWAVE”. The series started in 2000 in Sinaia (Romania) and the 2008 event will be its 9th edition. The Symposium is organized by the Microelectronics Research Group (MRG) of the Institute of Electronic Structure and Laser (IESL) of the Foundation for Research and Technology Hellas (FORTH) in collaboration with MITOS S.A and is technically sponsored by the European Microwave Association (EuMA) and the AMICOM FORUM which is the continuation of the AMICOM network of Excellence. The Symposium will provide an international forum for scientists and industrialists for the exchange of information on the most recent advances and best achievements in the area of RF MEMS and RF MSTs with emphasis on European activities. The Symposium consists of three events:

THERMINIC Workshops are a series of events to discuss the essential thermal questions of microelectronic microstructures and electronic parts in general. The biennial ICT Event (formerly called the ""IST Event"") is the most important forum for discussing research and public policy in information and communication technologies at European level. The Event brings together researchers and innovators, policy and business decision-makers working in the field of digital technologies. The ICT Event: -Presents Europe's future priorities for research funding in the ICT area; -Examines crucial issues of public policy for stimulating innovation through ICT development and uptake; -Creates opportunities to establish research and business partnerships and simply keep up to date in what is happening in various ICT research fields. The ICT Event is organised by the European Commission's Directorate General for the Information Society and Media and is usually hosted by the current Presidency of the European Union.
