MEMSCAP
MEMSCAP, the MEMS company, provides innovative solutions based on micro-electromechanical systems, or MEMS. The company enables customers in high-growth markets to incorporate strategic MEMS technology into their systems as a means of addressing critical technical and cost challenges. MEMS are microscopic mechanical systems that combine mechanical, optical and fluidic elements with electronics on a single integrated circuit.
MEMSCAP offers proven MEMS solutions that include components, prototyping and manufacturing services, component designs, and computer-aided design software suites. MEMSCAP supplies its solutions primarily to optical and wireless communications, aerospace, biomedical and pharmaceutical industries.
MEMSCAP was listed in 2001 on the Euronext exchange (ticker symbol: MEMS) and is now the only public pure-play MEMS company. Viewed by financial analysts as the primary comparable for the industry, MEMSCAP works with major equipment vendors, semiconductor manufacturers and systems houses across a range of markets.
THE MEMSCAP ADVANTAGE
Experience
MEMSCAP is unique in that it brings to its target markets broad-based MEMS design and manufacturing expertise, derived from years of experience in a range of industries. The company is customer-focused, enabling IC and equipment designers to drive high-performance, low-power and cost-effective MEMS-based products to market quickly and affordably through a choice of solutions that best fits their needs.
Manufacturability
MEMSCAP places a major emphasis on manufacturability, offering proprietary high-yield and high-volume production processes through its own advanced fabrication facility in Grenoble and its worldwide network of additional facilities. The company provides manufacturing expertise through its team of specialists who oversee production within the foundry network, enable lower costs per unit.
MARKET SOLUTIONS
Optical Communications
Full photonic switching, scaling and flexibility
MEMSCAP offers a range of optical hardware products based on full photonic switching system technology. These products are engineered to rigid telecommunications standards and enable customers to move quickly into a growing market. The optical portfolio includes switches, variable attenuators, tunable filters, active sources, optical actuation and optical assembly components. The company also has expertise in gain equalizers, dispersion compensation components and tunable sources. MEMSCAP optical switches are designed to enable network systems manufacturers to build low or high port-count systems by selecting different cross-connect array sizes. These products are ideal for the high-volume, high-margin metropolitan or access layers of the optical network and for use as protection switches. The active optical components are optimized for plastic optical fiber, for deployment in home networking and lighting applications.
Wireless Communications
Enhanced integration and smaller circuit size through MEMSCAP IP
MEMSCAP’s wireless MEMS products are designed to help manufacturers of portable wireless devices significantly shrink RF circuit size while increasing integration and performance. Using the company’s patented technology, design teams can replace stand-alone passive component chips with microscopic MEMS devices attached directly on top of the RF chip or within a module, using microelectronics manufacturing methods to cut components costs. Current RF products include high-Q inductors, RF filters and diplexers. Variable capacitors, high-value capacitors, RF switches, RLCs and other products are under development.
High-End Sensors
Design and production for demanding applications
MEMSCAP’s Capto business unit specializes in micromachined and MEMS-based sensors for critical applications and harsh environments, including aerospace, defense and medical settings. These products are able to meet extended lifetime operations where accuracy across a wide temperature range is a primary requirement. Products include pressure sensors, transducers, accelerometers and micro-gyros.
Prototyping and Manufacturing Services
Setting the standard for MEMS fabrication
MEMSCAP’s 30,000 square foot state-of-the-art MEMS foundry, located outside of Grenoble, France, offers customers the most modern MEMS facility available for high-volume manufacture. Incorporating a vast class 10 cleanroom for front and back-end operations, it provides a fully automated, semiconductor-style environment for both 6-inch and 8-inch wafer processing.
MEMSCAP dedicates a full 15 percent of its equipment budget to key functions such as test and analysis so that customers are assured the highest possible performance and reliability.
Packaging and assembly of components, especially optical components, have traditionally been labor-intensive, time-consuming tasks that can represent as much as two thirds of production cost. MEMSCAP is deploying unique automated assembly techniques that may slash unit assembly time by as much as 90 percent.
MEMSCAP ensures that manufacturing, packaging, assembly and test are tightly linked to MEMS design. The company’s design and fabrication teams cooperate closely with its manufacturing partners, working on site in the company’s multiple foundry facilities to develop prototypes and ensure manufactured component quality, yield and reliability. MEMSCAP’s jointly run lab with the French space agency CNES, in Toulouse, France, offers advanced capabilities in failure analysis.
CAD Tools for MEMS
Full-featured design and integration, open platform
MEMSCAP design tools offer an easy-to-use, customizable and comprehensive design and testing environment for development of MEMS-based products for diverse markets. These MEMS system-level design environments are open platforms that support popular IC design methodologies and that can be targeted to a range of foundries. The tools enable information sharing between system designers, IC designers, process engineers and MEMS experts working within different sections of the design team.
