Background of Application Area
- The household industry in Europe has a market volume of about 30 Million € (2000) and is working on a supranational level. The Western European production figures for large Household Appliances are in the order of 60 million units, with
- automatic washing machines about 16 million units
- refrigerators and freezers about 12 million units,
- dishwashers, microwave ovens, cookers and shavers, each between 5 and 7 million units
- Built in ovens, and dryers, each somewhat more than 3 million units.
- Most of these are produced in Italy (about 24 million units), followed by Germany (14 million units), France and UK (7 – 8 million units), Turkey, Slovenia and the other countries.
- The reduction of energy, water and detergent consumption are the main targets of the industry. The technical and economic requirements on such sensors and actuators are rather stringent, including low prices and high technical performance and lifetimes.
- Many parameters are determined in present household appliances, ranging from temperature, pressure, flow, position, tilt, up to optical parameters, humidity or weight.

Specific Activities of the USC 7 HA
Activities started in July 1999 with a constitutional session in Dortmund, visited by 24 experts. Each year about 3 meetings are held at companies or institutes or in conjunction to larger fairs.
This User-Supplier-Club has a growing number of members, from all European countries in the areas of
- HOUSEHOLD APPLIANCE COMPANIES
- SUPPLY MATERIALS
- PRODUCERS OF SENSORS AND MICROSYSTEMS
- ACADEMIC INSTITUTIONS
Specific Activities of the US- Club HA
- To discuss in a structured way on potential developments and driving forces in household appliances. This resulted in autumn 2000 in a contribution to the “NEXUS Technology Roadmap for Microsystems”; an activity which will be continued and updated during 2002.
- To exchange market data on sensors and appliances, in order to contribute to the new “NEXUS Market Analysis of Microsystems 2000 - 2005” with sounding data on this important mass market (available since spring 2002)
- To inform on new developments in the area of microsystems and microsensors with potential use in household appliances.
·
- To bring together partners with common interest in the research and development area, aimed to work commonly on a European level in an “Integrated Project on Components for Intelligent Home”
- Inform on energy reduction in appliances in general, and on the use of natural gas for household appliances, and the use of new sensors in this context.
- Developments of washing detergents and its consequences for microsystems (like sensors or microdosing systems).
Club Membership
Additional club members are welcome, in particular from the household appliance industry and its supply industry. Prerequisite is an active contribution to the goals of the USC.
