Background of Application Area

Instrumentation and Process Control (IPC) is a wide area and covers the sensing and the actuating of physical and chemical quantities in industrial manufacturing processes. In the chain of IPC there is also transport and processing (control) of the gained information.

Application areas where MST is playing a role in IPC are:

• manufacturing processes where consumables are expensive and small systems are of commercial benefits, these are mainly chemical and biological quantities, see sub-chapters environmental, chemical industry and food processing,
• manufacturing processes where there is a technical need which can only be fulfilled by MST products by accuracy, dynamic range, response time, speed and stability,
• areas where quantities to be measured can profit of commercial interesting MST sensors, like pressure sensors, flow sensors and gas sensors,
• manufacturing processes where the products are very small, where micro handling with micro sensors and micro actuators are needed, e.g. manufacturing, assembly of micro motors (e.g. RMB Smoovy). This is the area where micro robots are used and which we will exploit in more details.

Thematic Interests and Priorities of the USC IPC

Networking among potential and existing users and suppliers of microsystems. Company visits and presentations. Workshops on technology and market trends, which resulted in contributions to the "NEXUS Technology Roadmap for Microsystems" and to the "NEXUS Market Analysis of Microsystems" an activity which will be continued and updated.

Membership

Additional club members are welcome.
Prerequisite is an active contribution to the goals of the USC.
