Healthy Aims Dissemination Day - 2nd Dec 2004: Information and Registration

The NEXUS Medical Devices USC aims to bring together organisations involved in research, design, development, manufacture of Medical Devices with end users. The focus from the research and development will be on the use of micro and nano-technology in these applications. The focus at the user end will be to ensure the very latest technology is utilised to produce state of the art products for the medical sector.

The aim is to get the members from a large range of medical application sectors in order that the USC truly represents the medical sector. It is essential that the end users, who are defined as the clinicians, surgeons and other health organisations are represented in the network and help lead the new research and development activities.

The medical sector has in the past suffered from a discontinuing between the healthy service organisations and the research community. As such medical advancements have generally been made by the medical research groups, rather than exploiting the expertise available in the research communities.

The Medical Devices USC aims to address these fundamental issues by forming partnerships between research groups, designers, manufacturers and end users. The first success have already been achieved with a new 26M Euro, 4 year EC funded project to develop a range on Medical Implants, ‘Healthy Aims’.

The USC now wants to build upon this success by strengthening the membership within the USC, and generating new projects in the medical sector.

The simple approach regarding the development of new projects is simply – listen to the customer and work out how their needs can be answered.

Developing new medical application using this approach has already resulted in the first Technology Roadmap for medical devices to be produced by this USC. This will be updated every 2 years using input from members.

New ideas are often initiated from network meetings which run around every 4 months. These focus around a medical condition and a surgeon or clinician presents their requirements. To date talks have been on:

New themes will be chosen, and the meetings will take place in the location where the surgeon is present.

The benefits to members of the Medical Devices USC are:
