Background
The USC4-group working in the MST-field of Peripherals and Multimedia started in 1998, and so far, 2 meetings were held. From the start of the USC4 initiative, it was clear that, within the group, the interest of suppliers and end-users of technology was very strongly focussed on ink jet and its applications.
Co-ordination so far was done by Alessandro Bellone, R&D manager of the Italian Olivetti ink jet division. Due to an overloaded work programme within his company, he requested the NEXUS organisation to be relieved from his responsibilities as co-ordinator. This formal request was awarded.
In December 1998, his successor, Frans van de Weijer, from the Dutch company RPC, was formally elected by the NEXUS Executive Board. Due to this change over in co-ordination, some delay in the progress had to be reported. Now the organisational changes have been embedded, and a start-through has been initiated.
On March 16, a next meeting is planned where objectives and deliverables of the group will be formulated not only in the field of ink jet but also for expertise presently in the group available in the field of specific semiconductor areas, magnetic recording heads and laser induced material processing technologies. After this meeting, a summary will be reported within MST-news to up-date the actual status.
In addition to the work already carried out, the coming meetings will strongly be focussed on trends, technology developments, and market needs, in order to reflect technological opportunities onto market requirements and vice versa. From the discussions so far held it was concluded that it is of tremendous importance to be informed accurately about actual trends in the market and technology place, in order to address the right topics both by developers and end-users of technology.
Especially in the field of ink jet, it was concluded that changes on global level go that rapidly that the formed group can have a high added value for all partners involved in the discussions.
For end-users it is not always clear which technology to adapt, knowing the rapid changes taking place, while for the suppliers of technology there is the problem to formulate their strategy in a strongly competitive environment. This is due to the fact that the development of new technologies has to be balanced in terms of through-put time, absolute investment levels, and potential return-on-investment reflections.
In a broader perspective, it can be stated that the outcome of the discussions can help European organisations to get aware of the actual impact of this field, especially from the USA and Japan, and how to face these developments.
