PhD: Technologies associated with three dimensional systems integration

(Ref. No. AM – 03)
Within the PRTLI project NEMBES a PhD position has become available to study the technologies associated with three dimensional systems integration.

Three dimensional systems integration is best described as a combination of systems level assembly, packaging and silicon technology performed at wafer level. In this technology, functional systems are created by assembling devices from different technological backgrounds ( e.g. lasers, detectors, memories, microcontrollers, communications devices etc) to form a functional system. These systems need to be created at wafer scale and wafer scale silicon technologies need to be developed to provide vertical interconnect between system components.

This Project is funded by the PRTLI -4 project NEMBES and relates to the creation of mixed technology autonomous sensor systems for use in various environments such as
• monitoring staff and equipment in hospital environments,
• monitoring and controlling the environment and people flow in buildings and
• providing information to drivers and council planning officers on road conditions and traffic congestion issues.

A PhD Student with a background in electrical / electronic engineering and an interest in the development of technological processes. CMOS circuit design and systems level integration would be useful skills to have for this project.
