Postdoctoral Researcher

(Ref. No. SR – 04)
Project: Components using integrated passives are central to the operation of many ICT products. Recently, miniaturized inductors and transformers produced by MEMS techniques have shown an interesting possibility of achieving high efficiency at higher frequencies, not achievable by any other conventional wire wound fabrication techniques. We plan to develop within this project the technology for integrated inductor with converter IC to be used in monolithic power supply operating at 100s of MHz range. Finally, thus prepared power hardware will be tested for high frequency operation, aiming future power delivery for portable electronic devices
Position available: Initially one-year postdoctoral position (with a prospect of further extension) is available under supervision of Dr. Saibal Roy (email: saibal.roy@tyndall.ie) in the Microsystems centre, Tyndall National Institute, University College Cork, Ireland. The successful applicant will work as part of a multidisciplinary research team, which has a focus on the development of integrated magnetics.
The research of this particular position will involve elements of the following:
• Review of state of the art and patent search;
• Development of electroplating/ electrochemical processes to generate nanostructured (metallic/metallic alloys) softmagnetic materials;
• Increasing saturation flux density by incorporating high magnetic moment elements;
• Increasing resistivity by incorporating nonmagnetic/semiconducting elements;
• Systematic study of the effects of incorporation of nonmagnetic elements on resistivity, coercivity and saturation moment;
• Measurement and analysis of the magnetic properties(dc & ac) with temperature;
• Measurement and analysis of the complex permeability spectra with frequency;
• Measurement and analysis of the electrical properties;
• Optimize the process to achieve high flux density, anisotropy field and resistivity nanostructured materials;
• Testing of materials in prototype micro-magnetic devices;
• Development of metallization process for through hole vias in Silicon.

Requirements:
a) PhD degree in Electrochemistry/Experimental solid state physics/Microelectronics/ Materials Science/Engineering or similar.
b) In depth knowledge and experience in electrochemistry/electrochemical deposition/ electroplating.
c) In depth experience in magnetic measurements such as SQUID, VSM, Highfrequency Permeameter, Network analyzer, Impedance analyzer.
d) In depth knowledge in magnetism and magnetic data analysis.
e) Independent approach to carry the project work forward.
f) Ability to write the project reports, articles in journals/conferences independently.
g) Ability to partially supervise/assist PhD student/s.

Salary: ~ 40,000 euro/annum + Pension + PRSI contribution. Highly experienced candidate could be considered for few initial increments in salary.
